Nalanda University was one of the greatest achievements of ancient India and is recognised as the world’s first residential university. Located in present-day Bihar, Nalanda flourished as an international centre of learning between the 5th and 12th centuries, attracting scholars from China, Korea, Tibet, Southeast Asia, and beyond. It offered advanced education in philosophy, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, and literature, reflecting India’s intellectual leadership. Although Nalanda University no longer exists in its original form, its destruction marked a great loss to global knowledge. Today, Nalanda remains a powerful symbol of India’s rich educational heritage and its historic commitment to learning, inquiry, and cultural exchange.
